Language apps have been solving the wrong problem for a decade.
They're optimised for engagement. Streaks, points, leaderboards — brilliant at keeping you opening the app. Almost useless at making you fluent. We built Rumbo to fix the actual problem: getting you to a place where you're genuinely using Spanish in your life.
Why you stopped before — and why it wasn't your fault
Millions of people have tried to learn Spanish. Most of them quit — not because they lacked motivation or discipline, but because the tools they used were designed for retention, not results. Every streak, every notification, every locked lesson is an engagement mechanic dressed up as a learning feature.
The result is people who feel guilty when they miss a day, lose all their progress for a week off, and never get past the intermediate plateau — because nobody ever diagnosed what was actually blocking them or gave them a personalised path through it. That failure belongs to the app, not the learner.
What a real coach does that no app ever has
A real language coach finds out where you are, what you want to achieve, and what has blocked you before — then builds a path specific to you. They tell you when you're ready to move on. They explain things in the way that works for your brain. They connect you to real language in the wild, not just exercises in a vacuum.
Rumbo is that coach. Not a course with a fixed path. Not a gamified drill. A genuine, adaptive learning system — available to anyone, on any device, completely free at its core.
Our commitments — in plain terms
The core learning experience is free. Always. Every lesson, every level, every piece of content. We will never take something that's currently free and put it behind a paywall. If we add paid features, they will be genuine extras — conversation practice, offline packs, tutor mode — on top of a core that never shrinks.
We will never optimise for engagement at the expense of progress. We would rather you learn faster and open the app less than feel great about a number going up.
