Understanding Your Level

The international standard for language ability — and why Rumbo goes further.

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the global benchmark for measuring language ability. Used by universities, employers, and immigration authorities in over 40 countries, it means your progress is trackable against a recognised standard. When Rumbo says you're at B1, it means the same thing everywhere in the world.

The six levels — what each one actually means in real life

A1

Beginner

Greetings, numbers, basic questions. You can introduce yourself and understand very slow, clear speech.

A2

Elementary

Everyday transactions, describing your life, short conversations in familiar contexts.

B1

Intermediate

Handle most travel situations, describe experiences, follow the main points of clear native speech.

B2

Upper Intermediate

Understand complex topics, interact fluently with native speakers, write detailed texts.

C1

Advanced

Express yourself fluently and spontaneously for social, professional and academic purposes.

C2

Mastery

Understand virtually everything. Express with spontaneity and precision. Near-native.

CEFR levels and Rumbo levels — how they fit together

Rumbo uses standard CEFR levels as the foundation, with our own 30-level progression system built on top. Your CEFR level tells you where you stand globally — it's the same benchmark recognised by universities, employers, and immigration authorities worldwide. Your Rumbo level shows your progress within that band, giving you a fine-grained measure of momentum that the six CEFR bands alone can't provide.

The jump from A2 to B1 can feel enormous — months of effort with no visible marker of progress. That's one of the most common reasons learners give up: not lack of ability, but lack of visible momentum. Rumbo's 30-level system means you're always moving forward and always able to see it. The full breakdown lives in your dashboard once you're in.

Not sure where you are? The Rumbo level test takes 2 minutes and places you precisely — so your very first lesson starts at exactly the right point.
